Free Tax Preparation for 2016 Taxes

Empire College accounting students provide free tax preparation

For the eighth consecutive year, Empire College accounting students and faculty will be assisting United Way of the Wine Country in delivering free income tax services to low-to-moderate income residents through the Earn it! Keep It! Save It! (EKS)/Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. In order to participate in this unique, hands-on learning opportunity, each student has become IRS certified in advanced tax preparation.

Empire accounting students are prepared for the Certified Bookkeepers exam

Congratulations to Amelia Doran and Kelley Hazelton, Empire's first accounting students to take the four-part national Certified Bookkeeper examination through The National Association for Bookkeepers. And, of course, they passed with flying colors!

Advanced accounting students at Empire College are once again assisting United Way of the Wine Country and the Earn It! Keep It! Save It! Coalition in delivering free income tax clinics to community residents. The Empire College clinic is open now through Saturday, April 14, 2012, on Mondays and Thursdays from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon.

Empire students hold carnival to benefit Sloan House

Carnival - Saturday, June 26 - Game tickets $1

Empire College students have embraced a goal of raising funds for Sloan House Emergency Women’s Shelter through a campus-wide carnival on Saturday, June 26. Sloan House, a shelter that houses homeless women and their children, lost its funding and, as a result, may be forced to severely cut the services it provides clients or perhaps even close its doors.

Accounting Program News

Empire accounting students recently had the opportunity to work on an Inventory Project under the guidance of Susanne Richards, Director of Accounting and Human Resources, and Kass von der Mehden, Bookstore Manager. Participating students were Lisa Slayton, Judy Brazis, Melynda Canepa, and Jenni Garloff. This project has given the students real world experience with inventory record keeping which is a very valuable skill they will be able to include on their resumes.

Advanced accounting students at Empire College are gearing up for an Income Tax Clinic that will assist area high school students with filing their income tax returns. The concept for the clinic was created by members of Empire’s student chapter of the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA).
